Major Recruitment Drive For Nurses Now Underway

A new recruitment drive by the NHS seeks to boost the number of nurses, following falling numbers in recent years. With applications for nursing degrees falling, a new campaign hopes to inspire new generations to sign up to train as nurses. About the latest campaign

To coincide with the NHS’ 70th birthday celebrations, the organisation launched its latest campaign aimed at schoolchildren. Its aim is to inspire this demographic to discover the various opportunities that exist when working for the NHS, by encouraging them to consider the NHS for their future careers.

Entitled ‘We are the NHS’, the TV spot provides information about the different types of roles available in the NHS – from district nurses to delivery nurses and more. Showing the range of people and jobs that nurses can encounter, it’s a strong message to send to children thinking about what they want to be when they grow up.

Why the campaign is necessary

The number of nurses working in the UK is in decline. From staffing cuts to the end of the NHS bursaries that allowed many people to study, there are fewer students enrolling to become nurses. In addition, many nurses are leaving the profession as they face growing pressures working in the health sector.

Last year, there were more than 34,000 nursing vacancies in the UK, particularly in areas such as mental health and community nursing. Many nurses have felt as though they are unable to do their jobs, with wards being overstretched causing them to miss breaks and extend their shifts, leaving them exhausted by the end of it.

It is hoped that the campaign will instil the original values of the NHS to provide care for others. The campaign is focused on recruiting more home-grown nurses, instead of relying on workers from overseas. With more places available at universities, it’s a good time to consider becoming a nurse, with less competition over places.

How will the recruitment drive for nurses work?

It is hoped that the campaign will refresh viewers’ minds about the important work that NHS staff do on a daily basis. The launch video was the beginning of a widespread campaign featuring TV and radio spots, posters and a large social media campaign. By targeting students aged 14-18, it is hoped that they’ll come to see the value of working for the NHS and the different doors it opens.

Speaking about the campaign, Professor Jane Cummings, Chief Nursing Officer for England, said:

“Nurses and midwives provide expert skilled care and compassion, and they are highly talented leaders in the NHS. This campaign is all about inspiring young people and others who want a change of career to come and work for the NHS and have a rewarding and fulfilling career that makes a real difference.”

The key aim of the recruitment drive for nurses is to increase the number of applications to 22,000 as well as challenge some perceptions of working in the healthcare profession. The healthcare industry offers a variety of positions and can lead to a lifelong career with many possibilities.
